The goal  I have for my students is not to fill their minds with information they may not care about, but to help them be successful and he future.  I want them to be successful and responsible citizens because that is what makes our country strong.  Social studies is about protecting and maintaining our democracy and developing citizens that will care enough to inform themselves in the future and be interested enough to make informed decisions in the voting booth when they turn 18.

I've read that "the reward for making an effort to read is joy”.  I believe the reward for learning social studies is living an interesting life.   We need to allow students to find the interesting stuff they want to learn about to help them become interesting people.

I desire a class in which all of the student push themselves to learn as much as they can because they see content has meaning for them and they understand the benefits of the efforts.
I need to let the students know I expect them to think critically and reward them for doing it.  Teachers need to give them opportunities to explore the information in ways that are meaningful to them and display the results in creative, exciting ways.

Importance of Social Studies education

I hope my teaching will help my kids become better students, but more importantly, good citizens of the world.  If they feel that social studies is the subject where they can explore topics of their interest and learn in ways that appeal to them
they may continue to pursue this knowledge after school and later in life.  I want them to realize that social studies is the study of life and the subject where math, language arts and science have relevance for them.  Here is where they put their skills into action - to find a job, do their taxes, decide which politicians best fit for their beliefs, etc.
Social studies is the most important subject we teach.  It is the reason we have public schools - to create citizens of value.
